Chapter 8
Chapter 8
Janelle fidgeted in her sleep, rolling over onto her side in the small space offered between her two fathers. Drowsily opening her brown eyes, she yawned, pushing herself up by her little arms and into a sitting position. Glancing at the two men beside her, she gave a tiny smile when she saw that they were both snoring. Giggling, she turned to Puck, leaning forward to kiss the end of his nose. The face made a slight face in his sleep, and the girl quickly turned to Clopin, grabbing the rough sides of his unshaven face to nuzzle her cheek against his own. Each man slowly opened their eyes, roused by this familiar morning greeting, and smiled faintly at Janelle's antics.
Clopin gently nuzzled back, making the girl giggle as his stubble scratched against her soft skin. Puck glanced at their beside clock, sighing when he saw the time. Six a.m. On a Sunday, nonetheless. "Child, what do you have against sleeping, anyway?" Puck grumbled, chuckling a little under his breath as she turned to face him. Children shouldn't be allowed to be that adorable this early in the morning; it made it much harder for a parent to stay irritated.
"I think that a certain fae just needs to suck it up, don't you, Janelle?" Clopin said teasingly, laughing as he swept the girl into his arms, making her laugh out loud as he bounced her in the air over his head. Puck narrowed his eyes at the gypsy, giving a dry grin at the display.
"Says the man whose breakfast is getting made by said fae," Puck retorted, leaning over to kiss the baby's cheek and tousle the gypsy's hair. Crawling out of bed, he stretched his arms over his head, yawning slightly as he moved his tired limbs. Turning back to face his husband and daughter, he asked with a smile, "What would you two like to have this morning? Oatmeal or toast?"
"Toast, please, mon amour," Clopin replied with a nod. Looking down at the girl in his arms, he asked sweetly, "And what would you like, ma petite fille? Do you want what I'm having or what Puck's having?"
The girl appeared to think for a moment, then smiled brightly, clamping a hand on the gypsy's shirt with a decisive nod. "Daddy."
The room came to a complete standstill, the two trickster slowly turning to look at one another. Each held their mouth slightly agape, shocked at the sudden first sound of their daughter's voice. Her first word…and, even better, it had been something pertaining to her parents.
"Did she just…."
"She did…"
Both Puck and Clopin's looks turned to those of joy, and Puck rushed over toward the two, squatting down on the floor beside the gypsy's lap, where Janelle was currently sitting. The little girl smiled innocently, blissfully unaware of what her fathers were so excited about.
"Janelle, Jay…darling, please, say it again," Puck smiled, pleading eagerly. Thinking for a moment, he pointed to Clopin. "Jay, who's that?"
The girl glanced up at her gypsy father, grinning. "Daddy," she replied, hugging him closer. Puck and Clopin shared a glance, each grinning widely. Clopin pulled the girl up to his face, kissing her cheek playfully and making her giggle wildly.
"Yes, yes, that's right," he laughed, bouncing the girl up and down. Pointing to Puck, he grinned, asking, "Now, who is that?"
Janelle put a finger to her chin, frowning uncertainly as she stared at Puck. Well, Puck was her daddy, too….but they couldn't both be daddy, could they? It was too confusing for the baby. Turning to Clopin, she shook her head, showing that she didn't know.
Puck's face fell just a little, but he still smiled, leaning forward to wrap the child in a hug. His daughter was brilliant, and that was a fact no matter what in Puck's mind. Clopin gave a sympathetic smile as Puck took the girl into his arms, standing to wrap an arm around the fae's waist. "Don't worry, mon amour. She just…doesn't know what to call you yet. She'll learn with time. I'm somewhat interested in seeing just what it turns out to be."
Puck smiled gratefully in return, leaned closer to the gypsy as Clopin gave his cheek a kiss. Propping Janelle up on his left hip, the fae grinned, tickling under the girl's chin. "You know, I'm a little interested as well."
---
"Jay! Hay, y'all!!!"
"Eeeaaaaaahhhhhh!!!!!!"
Puck shook his head as the screaming baby desperately clung to the unicorn's head, attempting to pull herself up by his mane. Bob grinned, lifting the girl up with his nose and sliding her onto his back. Cackling with delight, Janelle eagerly clutched at Bob's mane, hugging his neck as the unicorn began to gallop around the room.
Taylor smirked, laughing at the sight as she turned to face Puck. "Sorry to bother you guys, Puck. Bob would just not shut up about visiting his little buddy."
"Hey, no problem," Puck chuckled. "It's a nice diversion to have him around every now and then," the trickster added, pointing his thumb in the direction of the two companions. Taking a seat beside Clopin at their table, he gestured for Taylor to do the same, so that they could talk.
"So, how's family life?" The Superjail assassin smiled. "Anything exciting here lately?"
"Daddy! Daddy!" Janelle squealed, trying to grab Clopin's attention. The gypsy grinned broadly, clapping as the girl slid down Bob's back in a makeshift slide. Both Bob and Taylor paused, almost shocked at the sound of her voice. Taylor blinked, slowly turning her head back to stare at the two fathers.
"Did she just say…?"
Clopin nodded, obviously happy about being the girl's first word.Taylor laughed, glancing back at Puck. "So who does she direct that at? Both of you, or just-"
"Just Clopin," Puck quickly said, suppressing a sigh at the end of his sentence. "She…doesn't really have a name for me yet."
Bob's ears perked up at that, and he slowly trotted back further into the living room as the three adults continued to converse. Taylor was a little amused by the situation, but gave a sympathetic smile towards the fae. It was understandable, though, she had to admit; it would have had to have been very confusing for the girl to call two people the same name.
After a few more minutes, Bob and Janelle came hurriedly towards the kitchen, the little girl clutching for dear life to the unicorn's mane. Clopin raised an eyebrow at the animal's carrying methods, but said nothing, choosing to subtly stand up to move closer to the creature.
"Puck! Clopin! Y'all have got to hear the new trick I just taught Jay!"
The two trickster glanced at one another, each raising an eyebrow suspiciously, but Clopin answered, "What is it, Bob?"
"Alright, do yo' thing, Jay," Bob grinned, turning back to face the girl. "Say it, y'all." Janelle clapped her hands happily, pointing in the direction of her white-haired father in a questioning manner. Bob nodded, and added, "Right, y'all. Now who's that?"
Janelle grinned, and replied proudly, "Mommy!"
Puck's eyes widened, his jaw falling open slightly in surprise at the girl's second word. While he was glad that it had been directed at him…did it have to be mommy? Anything but mommy, oh, anything but mommy!
Clopin's mouth fell open a little as well, a gloved hand flying to his mouth as he tried to hold back a laugh. Taylor made no attempt to conceal her amusement, laughing hysterically as Janelle beamed from her place on the unicorn's back, who was whinnying with delight at the moment. Puck's expression turned to one of embarrassment, and he scowled at the other three grown creatures. "Very funny. Haha."
Glancing back at Janelle, Puck's gaze softened a bit as he saw his daughter's now confused expression. Had she done something wrong? Everyone else was happy….why was Puck upset? The fae picked up on this, and slowly walked over to take the girl into his arms.
"Thank you, love," he smiled, kissing the top of her forehead. Oh well. If he was going to be a mommy, then he was going to be a damn good one.
