Walking Hearts
Chapter 1Making the decision to have a child is momentous. It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body. ~Elizabeth Stone

Something was missing in the tricksters' lives. They knew not what, however, and that seemed to be their major problem. They were married now; lived in a nice little home together that wasn't too far from their friends, and they were even
immortal, for crying out loud. All in all, they had a pretty satisfactory life, to say the least. But still something was missing.
Perhaps they had just gotten bored with life. After all, things had relatively died down in terms of excitement for the two men, each of them having settled down to be with each other. So, they tried going on various vacations together. But not just any kind of vacations. Each being the adventurous type, they'd gone flying through dangerous caverns in many distant lands, searching for something fun and interesting to do.
They'd tried secluding themselves from the rest of the world, thinking that the pressures of society might be getting to them. They'd even tried staying away from each other for a short time, but each found that to be even worse and more dull than their original problem.
But what was it? If it wasn't boredom with themselves, the rest of the world, or their surroundings, then what was it? They needed
something….and whatever it was, it was beginning to eat away at them, bit by bit.
The answer, of course, didn't come to them right away. No, that would have been far too easy, and probably wouldn't have brought the same result in the grand scheme of things. It came to them over the course of many days, in many forms of, big surprise….advertising.

"Tune in next week to hear Karen say, 'I'm having a baby!'""I think I'll pass," Puck said drily, lazily reaching up his arm to change the channel. Clopin breathed a sigh of relief at the other's channel flipping, comfortably resting his arm around the other's shoulder in the chair they were sharing. Very little of what was on TV was to their interest, resulting in the couple to absentmindedly change the channels every five seconds.
"Honestly, I don't see how soap operas can make so many aimless storylines out of childbirth," Puck rolled his eyes, sighing irritably when the next channel turned out to be a commercial for diapers. Clopin raised an eyebrow at the other, but said nothing, giving a small shrug at what the other had to say.
"Well, it makes for interesting plot twists, drama, and generally causes tears in some way or another. And, that always makes good TV," the gypsy laughed, leaning his head against the other's shoulder.
"Mhm," Puck grumbled a bit, continuing to change the channels. Stumbling across a teenage musical number, Clopin nearly forced him to stop, recognizing the show to be one of his liking.
Puck stared at the other for a moment, and was met with an embarrassed blush and an eyeroll.
"Really?"
"It's…it's entertaining, okay?" Clopin defended, motioning to the screen. "It's a pretty decent description of high school life, and the kids sing some of my favorite musical numbers."
Puck held back a laugh at the other, smirking as he leaned back to watch.
Oh well…at least it didn't have… "Quinn…are you sure you want to give her up?""Arghh!!!" Puck cried out in frustration, bringing his face to his palm as the screen soon filled with the image of a teen mother and her newly born baby. "Is there nothing left untouched by the stain of this trend?!"
"Puck…what the-? What is with you?" Clopin asked suddenly, turning to look at the other in confused surprised. "Why are you getting so upset over this? It's just a TV show."
"Because…because they overdramatize this! They make everything seem like parenthood is the only thing worth waiting for in life!" Puck said angrily, holding his arms out in front of him in a frustrated gesture. "If that wasn't enough, they just love to rub the whole thing in our faces! I can't stand it!"
"Rub it in our faces?" Clopin questioned, even more confused now. "Puck…I don't understand…"
Puck sighed heavily, leaning back tiredly in the chair. With his arm laying against the side of the chair, he rested his forehead in his palm, a look of anger and bitterness to his face.
"They have to control everything and make parenthood seem like the greatest thing since bloody Oberon, and then they have the nerve to shove it in our faces at every passing second!" Puck sighed, looking back at the other sadly. "When we can't even have children. We couldn't if we wanted to…I can't give you a child. And they make us feel jealous of that. Ashamed, even."
Puck looked away, both a bit embarrassed and upset about his outburst. Clopin could only stare at the elf in near shock, the notions coming as a complete surprise to the gypsy. A child? Did the other want to have…a child? Of course they couldn't really have one of their own; even magic had its limits. But, maybe they could at least…
Wait, what was he saying? Since when had Clopin wanted to be a father? He hadn't really had the chance to experience true parentage as a child, being orphaned at such a young age. He didn't know the first thing about parenthood!
But then again…who really did, until they became a parent themselves?
It took the gypsy a minute longer to think about what he as about to say, but eventually, he cleared his throat, turning back to face his husband.
"Puck…" the gypsy king began, swallowing nervously. "…do you…want to have a child?"
Puck looked back up at the question, wide-eyed and shocked. He hadn't meant to sound like he…actually wanted one…but he supposed it must have sounded like it. Did he really want to…do that? The unbelievable responsibility it would bring, the complications and stress, and the worry and unknown terrors that a child could bring…it was just too much for the Puck to try and consider all at once.
"I…I don't know," he said uncertainly, mumbling a bit. "Do…you want one?"
"I'm asking you. You're the one who brought it up."
"Well, I don't know!" Puck said suddenly, his tone sounding nervous and uncomfortable. "I…I don't know. I mean, a kid would be…fun, I guess, but…we don't know the first thing about parenting! We haven't barely been married a year!" The elf sat back with a heavy sigh, putting a hand to his forehead in a combination of worry and disbelief.
Each of the tricksters sat back, thinking. Could they really handle a child? It would definitely be a change…they were just now getting used to finally living alone together, after all. A kid could drastically change all that. And a child was a permanent fixture in their lives, they knew this well.
But…then again…both Puck and Clopin adored children. Clopin had had Esmeralda, while Puck had had Alexander. But they were both all grown up now. Neither of the tricksters could say that they would mind going through all that again, especially now that they could do it
together.
Each coming to a realization of this at about the same time, they slowly turned to face each other, their faces uncharacteristically serious.
"Are you sure you want to do this? I mean…I don't want you to feel obligated for my sake or anything," Puck said, looking away for a moment.
"I…yes. Yes I am, Puck," Clopin nodded after a moment. "And I'm not just doing it for you. I would very much like to be a father, especially if it's with you."
The two looked back at each other, breaking into soft, small smiles. "So…I guess we're…having a baby?" Puck said tentatively, laughing a bit nervously at the whole situation.
"I…I guess so. Wait, an
adopted baby, right?" Clopin replied teasingly, raising an eyebrow at the other.
Puck reddened, rolling his eyes at the other with a smirk. "No, I mean we'll get Taylor to turn me into a chick again. You know what I meant!" He laughed, putting his arms around the other's shoulders. Clopin only smiled, pulling the other closer.
"You'll be a really great dad, Clopin," Puck murmured, smiling into the other's chest. Clopin gave a small beam at that, gently stroking the other's back.
"Thank you,
mon amour. And you'll make a terrific…" Clopin bit his lip, considering having a bit of fun with the other, but catching Puck's warning look, revised his decision. "…father as well. I love you, Puck."
Smiling, the fae leaned forward to kiss the gypsy. "And I love you, Clopin. But…I think I might love you just a little bit more now."
