Helen sniffled and nodded. "He's usually drinking tea at this time of day out in the courtyard somewhere." she told her mother. Such an odd word to think of. Mother.

Layton was sitting down, enjoying a cup of tea. As usual at this time of day. His beady eyes wavered over to Helen, and, no, that couldn't be! Claire died. And Celeste certainly wouldn't fool Hershel anymore. "Helen, who's this?" he asked as he got up with his tea, standing beside his daughter.
"I would think the great Professor Layton would know his daughter's mother, the one who gave him that hat of his. Claire." Helen replied as she looked at her father.

"It really is me, Hershel" she smiled.

"But, Claire, I thought you had died in that explosion when you had to go back in time." Hershel Layton said. He had not seen her in so long since she had gone back in time.
"Apparently not, Father." Helen replied to her father.

"C-Claire..." Hershel said as he dropped his tea. "How long has it been since I've seen you?" Professor Layton hardly ever blushed anymore when he was around her now.

Hershel Layton hugged her back. This time, he didn't want to lose her in the past. Not ever again. Maybe they would have another Christmas together. Maybe she would stay. Maybe she would give Helen the mother she always dreamed of, as well as Flora.

Professor Layton almost cried when he heard that. But he was a gentleman. A gentleman never cries in public. He wouldn't want Claire to see him like that. "Good. Where did you go, Claire?" he asked. He had to know what happened to her.

"I, really never died. I was looking for you two. I finally found your names on the animated high list and I dashed right over here" she said.

She never really died. If Hershel could have her now, nothing to tear them apart, Professor Layton would enjoy that. He'd enjoy that a lot. "What do you teach then, Claire?" he asked. Claire. It felt weird to say her name again when she slipped from his fingers. Twice.
